According to legend, brandy was first distilled when a particularly enterprising Dutch shipmaster figured he would be able to save enormous amounts on freight charges if he distilled all the water out of his wine, shipped it, then re-hydrated it upon arriving at his destination in Holland. Upon arrival, however, some friends of his decided they liked the distilled wine better and encouraged the shipmaster to keep it as it is. They called this new spirit "brandewijn" meaning "burned wine" which later became "brandy."
