SHUTTLES

Intro by Stephanie Schettler-Cumming | Photos by Orphonic Multimedia

Ahhhh ... summer in Wisconsin. Soaking up the sun and drinking a cold beverage outdoors ... what could be better? The Henry Meier Festival Grounds (where the world’s largest outdoor music festival—Summerfest—is held), Miller Park, and the college and professional basketball games draw thousands of people into the city each year.

So, what’s the downside here? The parking fiasco that surely awaits is a headache that you’d have to be a little crazy to enjoy dealing with. Who wants to pay $50 for a date night at a Brewers game and then another $20 for parking? And this example is on the low end. To top this, it’s bound to be busy. This means waiting in long lines or driving around aimlessly, desperately searching for a cheap or free parking spot near your event.

The solution to all of this is simple and ingenious—take a shuttle! They’re complimentary with the purchase of food or beverage at many bars throughout the area. If your destination is Miller Park, then Balistreri’s Bluemound Inn, Catch 22, and Mo’s Irish Pub are all great pre-game options that are equipped with a shuttle to take you to and from the stadium. We all know the week of Summerfest is crazy downtown. A ride to and from the festival grounds is ideal to avoid paying a small fortune to park. Who’s on Third, Karma, and Nomad World Pub all offer shuttle service to the fest. For Marquette and UWM fans or those looking to attend an event at the Bradley Center, there are plenty of options for you as well. Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub, Steny’s Tavern & Grill, and O’Lydia’s each provide shuttle service to and from many events in the city. With a full belly and beverage in hand, board the shuttle to your destination and let someone else take care of the driving for a change.

Balistreri’s Bluemound Inn

While pizza pies topped with gooey cheese are the main thrust here, the rest of the menu dabbles in Italian-American fare, too. With starters like braised mussels topped with tomato and saffron, easing into hearty portions of pasta like the Pasta Balistreri (eight ingredients plus marinara sauce over rigatoni pasta). It’s all designed to fuel you up for the free shuttle-ride over to Miller Park for home games. It’s free when you buy dinner or a drink at the bar.

Burke’s Irish Castle

You definitely won’t be hungry as you board the Burke’s Irish Castle shuttle to go to the Miller Park. Burke’s provides a full menu of appetizers, soups, salads, and burgers. Examples include Irish Frachos (waffle fries with corned beef and cheddar ale sauce), apple walnut salad, and a mac and cheese burger. There is a variety of specials, but some particularly noteworthy ones are the half-price craft beer special on Mondays and the $2 burger bar on Wednesdays. Although the extensive spirits menu and Irish whiskey flights are intriguing, a local craft beer from their generous list might be more in keeping with game day.

Catch 22 Bar & Grill

Anything but a paradox, Catch 22 is an upscale-ish sports pub boasting more TVs than you can shake a stick at (in case you enjoy shaking sticks). This bar offers traditional Wisconsin bar fare, drink specials, and—you guessed it—free shuttle service for baseball and basketball enthusiasts. Bring your entourage and order the Brewers pre-game extravaganza consisting of discounted buckets of beer, burgers, and appetizers or show your ticket for the game and get half off the first round of tap beer or rail drinks. After appropriately gorging and imbibing, hop on the coach and let Catch 22 transport you to epic Milwaukee fandom.

I’d give Jackson’s Blue Ribbon Pub an award for their generous shuttle service that’s offered for all the Brewers home games, if I could. The free service is available at both the Tosa and Downtown locations and will take you to Miller Park and bring you back to the Pub. In addition, the downtown location offers shuttles to Bucks and Marquette basketball games and occasionally for other events going on at the Bradley Center. If your private event could use a lift, contact Jackson’s to rent their shuttle. Jackson Pub is a great meeting spot before and after the game, with their large beer selection and a menu of dishes that offers something for everyone.

Karma Bar & Grill

Recommended by Kristine Hansen

This food-focused Lower East Side bar shuttles music and sports fans alike to Miller Park for home games (starting an hour before the first pitch and picking up an hour after the last inning) and the Henry Meier Festival Park (Summerfest, a continuous loop from noon on). Hop on board at no cost with a food or drink purchase. Grub ranges from fried Wisconsin cheese curds to a health-conscious hummus platter and 10 sandwiches plus eight burgers, for more substantial fare. From 3 to 7 pm Monday through Thursday, enjoy $4 cocktails and a buck off taps.

Mo’s Irish Pub

Recommended by Elissa Cahn

Taking the shuttle from Mo’s Irish Pub is a festive way to travel to the baseball game. The shuttle runs from both locations one hour before and after the game. A minimum of one drink is required. For an extra reason to visit the Tosa location, you’ll snag a free Ketel One cocktail with your ticket stub after the game. Garlic cheese fries, pub nachos, and crispy fried pickles are fun pre-game snacks to share. An Irish Heritage Flight (7-ounce samples of Guinness, Harp, and Smithwick’s) maintains the whimsy of an afternoon at the ballpark.

Nomad World Pub

1401 E Brady St | nomadworldpub.com | facebook.com/nomadworldpub

Recommended by Kristine Hansen

With a staggering number of craft beers (24) on tap, and a few outdoor tables, Nomad World Pub is a great place on Brady Street to meet friends for a beer—and get a free shuttle to Summerfest. The shuttle runs every 20 minutes during Summerfest’s hours and is free to hop on, so long as you buy a drink (which can be taken on the shuttle). Arrive on a weeknight between 4 and 4:18 pm and you’ll be treated to a Happy Hour special that translates to paying only $1 for most drinks.

O'Lydia's Bar & Grill

Recommended by Jennifer Adams

Let O’Lydia’s Bar & Grill be your personal chauffeur for every Milwaukee Brewers home game. Need more options? The shuttles also run to Summerfest, Irish Fest, Marquette, and UWM Basketball games, as well as all Brew City Bruisers bouts. Take advantage of O’Lydia’s weekly food and drink specials before the game or stick around after the game and check out their late night menu, which includes my favorite, the Reuben Rolls. Save your ticket stub for even more savings. As always, enjoy free parking (on and off street options are available.)

Oscar’s Pub & Grill

1712 W Pierce St | oscarsonpierce.com | facebook.com/oscarsonpierce

Recommended by Nick Rasmussen

Oscar’s Pub & Grill opened in 2011 to satiate neighborhood burger lusts. But this Clarke Square joint is infinitely more than just a burgertorium. One of the hidden gems of this noshery is their shuttle to Miller Park for all home Crew games. Yes, there is a robust selection of shuttle bars in the city, but Oscar’s will grant you a unique experience beginning with one of the more underrated Bloody Marys in Milwaukee. If a bit peckish, order up a Big O and bask in supreme burgatory while your friends roll you onto the “O Mobile” enroute to baseball glory.

Steny’s Tavern & Grill

800 S 2nd St | stenystavern.com

Recommended by Nick Rasmussen

Part sports bar, part local imbibery, Steny’s indulges your desires with a plethora of TVs showing Brewers, Bucks, Packers, Blackhawks, and any other Northern Hemisphere sports franchise that you can conjure. But another draw is their shuttle service to Miller Park, Bradley Center, and Summerfest grounds. Shuttle drivers are timely, courteous, and a pantload of fun. While waiting for one of their conspicuously painted shuttles, duck in for one of 20+ taps or a famous Bloody to chase down some sublimely decadent wings or gargantuan nachos. Steny’s isn’t just a bar, it’s a true Milwaukee institution boasting a multitude of charismatic personalities.

Who’s on Third

1007 N Old World Third St | whosonthirdmke.com

Recommended by Mrinal Gokhale

Who’s on Third is a convenient spot to enjoy a burger and some beer before a sporting event or concert. These free shuttles run during both Brewer’s games and Summerfest (in 30-minute intervals), depending on traffic. Who’s on Third also offers a private room for special events, like bachelor parties and birthday parties, making it a perfect addition to the shuttle if you’re planning to go to a game afterward. Never struggle to find parking at Summerfest Grounds or Miller Park when you book a free shuttle with Who’s on Third this summer.

La Dolce Vita, the sweet life, is not just a saying but a way of life for Italians. In Italy, the lifestyle
embraces a laid back and rush-free mentality. If you visit, you will quickly find out that the typical
evening for an Italian is to start off with aperitivo. The experience is not done in a timely fashion;
the idea is to become consumed with the pure enjoyment of the drinks, food and company.
