"This is my at home white table wine. This blows away any Pinot Grigio from Italy in that same price range. Aged on the lees gives it a great body and texture which you don’t find from Italy. This gives it just a touch of color, but really adds to the body and texture of this wine. This can’t be beat!"

In celebration of their 40th Anniversary, Door Peninsula has released Schoolhouse Cherry and Schoolhouse Apple wines. Cherry and apple wines were the first two offerings when the winery first opened in 1974, so they honored their roots but added a unique twist and experimented with oak barrel aging. The results are mellow and semi-dry, making these fruit wines more akin to their grape-based cousins.

A good summer wine lends itself to chilling, sipping and easy mixing. Take advantage of fresh, seasonal fruits and berries by throwing together a tasty sangria with the Schoolhouse Cherry wine. It has a brilliant ruby hue accented by a hint of cherry candy and oak on the nose. Tart cherry and cranberry bite on the sip and slowly fade into a pleasant green apple finish. Slight tannins from the cherry skin cut the sweetness on the mouthfeel.

When I think of apple wine, I envision cool weather and sweaters. Not so with Door Peninsula’s latest white! It’s very pale, crisp and semi-dry with high drinkability. The oak aging helps mellow the sweetness, making this an approachable option for any guest. Schoolhouse Apple is overall mild, yet it has enough character to stand up to light summer fare.

Acrobat Pinot Noir 2010

King Estate Winery | Eugene, Oregon
13.00% ABV

The Acrobat Pinot Noir from Oregon has a gorgeous ruby garnet color and hits you with hints of mushroom and tobacco on the nose.  It feels light in the mouth which makes it easy to drink without food but easily paired with a lighter dish. There were hints of cherry and raspberry, but I would characterize this as less fruity and more like laying face down on a leather couch and taking a deep breath. While higher end Oregon Pinot Noir may have more complexity and depth than this, I found that at just under $20, Acrobat offers a myriad of appealing flavors to explore and enjoy.
