Douro Valley - Portugal

Oh porto, how I love you so. I don’t really care for sweets, just sweet wine. Port is made from red grapes from the Douro Valley in the north of the country. The grapes are then sent down river to Porto. In the early 1600’s, Luis XIV’s chancellor, Monsieur Colbert, restricted trading between the mainland of Europe and England. To satisfy the thirst of the British people for wine and other European products, wool merchants traded from the coastal town of Viana De Castello, north of Oporto. They traded for a range of products including dried fruits, olive oil and dry Portuguese wines. That is why one would pair a blue cheese, such as Stilton, and dried dates.

Douro Valley - Portugal

Port wine vines need to grow in schist rich soil and require a specific micro-climate. It is produced through a unique vinification method. The red varietals are the most common. The wine is produced in the beautiful landscape of the Douro Valley in Alto Douro region, a region that is classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. The wine is exported from the city of Porto, thus acquiring the name Porto (or "Port" in English-speaking countries). There are several varieties of Port wine; some of the most popular are the Tawny, White, Ruby, and Late Bottled Vintage (L.B.V.).

This white port rivals the best Fino Sherry as an aperitif or even dry dessert port but with a long shelf life. It drinks like a spicy wine with rich, nutty character. It is also wonderful as “Portonic,” poured over the rocks with a splash of tonic and squeeze of lime. Ask for the “portonic” at Balzac!
