OK buckaroos, no more messing around … now we’re getting serious. In the world of bubbles, there’s, well, bubbles … and then there’s Champagne. There are two important words to remember if you’re a Champagne fanatic, or a novice. It’s the phrase Grower Champagne. What does this mean, you ask? Well, you know all of those really expensive Champagnes that James Bond pours over his femme fatales, or that thousand-dollar-a-bottle plonk that your favorite rappers namedrop? It’s not those. Hey, don’t get me wrong. If Jay-Z is buying, then I’m drinking, but you can do just as well as him if you march into your favorite wine shop and remember those two magic words: Grower Champagne. Those gigantic producers tend to make wines that taste very similar to one another. It’s by design, as they want to create a “house style” that won’t change much at all over the years.

The flipside of this is the small grape grower that makes his own wine, embracing the unique soil and climate qualities that sets his or her grapes apart from his neighbors. Most of these wines you will have never heard of before, but that’s OK. Put your trust in your friendly neighborhood wine merchant, remember those two buzz words, and you should walk out with a great bottle of Champagne for a fraction of what you’d spend on the big marquis producers’ offerings.

Check out this 100% Pinot Noir-based selection from teen-tiny grower Jean Laurent. Since it’s comprised of all Pinot, it has the ability to stand up to a wider array of heartier fare, such as wild game, ham and even grilled steak.

By Pete Bressert, Balzac Wine Bar

Sonoma County, CA - USA
Vintage: 2009

I was once told that the color of this wine was “Beaujolais blue.” This wine has a wonderful weight and texture. Nicely dry, there is nothing flabby about this wine and textbook strawberry flavors can be found within. ~ $10
