Willamette Valley, Oregon

Elk Cove pinot noir rosé is a treasure. Willamette Valley is renowned for producing high-quality pinot noir and pinot gris, and this rosé hits the mark. Pinot noir is one of my favorite varietals for rosé, typically nice and light with lovely strawberry notes, and this is no different. It’s very crisp, bright and very light in color. Another family-owned and -operated winery, the owner’s son, Adam Godlee, grew up in the vineyard and has been the vintner for over fifteen years. With fewer than 2,000 cases produced, Elk Cove pinot noir rosé is still handcrafted, but accessible to all. I love this wine and will be buying it for my summer patio endeavors. It is very easy to drink and would pair well with just about anything—I plan to try it with grilled scallops or crab cakes.

Languedoc-Roussillon, France

This wine demonstrates the true expressions of Languedoc varietals in rosé and consists of true southern Rhône grapes: Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre (GSM). Rhône-style rosés have the perfect color—not as dark as a cab or malbec rosé, and not nearly as light as a pinot noir rosé. A slight sweetness is noticed right away along with a fair amount of body. Raspberry and violet are the main flavors I gathered. This wine certainly lingers on the palate, in a welcome way. The estate was purchased in 1998 by John Goelet, who has an impressive resume. Since 1972 he has founded Clos Du Val Winery in Napa, Taltarni in Australia and Clover Hill in Tasmania (yes, they make wine there). I find the Domaine de Nizas to be a perfect GSM rosé. I’d drink this paired with food or alone. It retails around $14, and is more than worth it.

San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina

Time for something funky AND delicious! With loads of bright fruit on the nose and palate, New Age is a sweet wine, but its sweetness doesn't turn me off—it excites me. New Age is semi-sparkling and reminds me almost of a juice spritzer, and really, who doesn't love those? The winery suggests serving this on ice, with which I agree, but that makes it more of a spritzer and cocktail than a wine to sip and swirl; then again, who cares? I recommend this to anyone, especially moscato drinkers. I am not going to recommend a pairing, because this isn't really a "food wine." Hailing from Argentina, the blend is half malbec and half merlot. New Age rosé almost reminded me of a mamertino or Lambrusco. New Age is a really fun wine with a great taste and, and just like the others, is very affordable at around $14.

Cafayete Valley, Argentina

I smelled earth right away on the nose which made me a little nervous, especially since I pulled out a pink cork, but on the tongue I was greeted by cherry and pomegranate, followed by the earthed finish that initially made me sceptical. Good balance existed between the fruit and the finish. Most malbec rosés have more body than other varietals and this was not an exception. This was possibly even fuller than the cabernet rosé, which isn't good or bad, simply a matter of preference. Also an Argentinian rosé, Michel Torino malbec rosé is made in northern Argentina’s Cafayete Valley from one hundred percent malbec. Skin contact is minimal and the color is luscious, much like its flavor. Try it with a spinach and strawberry salad. This can be found for around a reasonable $15.
