This family has perfected organic growing in Mendocino. This is the classic American Zinfandel. Flavors of cassis, dark briar fruit and peppercorn are framed by toasty oak. Deceptive in its approach, this wine is a sneak attack of awesomeness. ~ $17

Beaujolais - France

This wine is produced in the heart of Beaujolais and should not be confused with nouveau or village-designate wines found on most store shelves. The soil composition of the area has quite a fair amount of schist from the last ice age. This imparts amazing notes of violets to the bouquet of the Gamay grape. Ruby red in color, with an unmistakable finish, you can’t go wrong. Note: don’t try to carve the wax off. Put your corkscrew through it. ~ $26

74% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Malbec, 4% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Aromas of plum and black currant intermingled with caramel and molasses. The silky entry melts into an ultra-rich core of dark fruit. A supple finish is testament to this wine's immediate approachability. ~ $31

Red blends seem to be all the rage these days. I’m oft asked where my favorites come
from. Great Bordeaux and Châteauneuf-du-Pape have their place in the wine world, but who can afford to drink it more than once a month or so? This youthful but well-structured, wine is extremely versatile. It is ideal for everyday drinking, but can also stand up to more sophisticated dishes. Its freshness makes it particularly suitable for accompanying pasta with meat sauces and Mediterranean-style vegetable dishes. I like mine with gyros from our neighbors at Apollo Café. ~ $15
