Fortaleza Blanco Tequila
Recommended By: Rob Zellermayer, Palm Tavern
“Honoring tradition over efficiency, Fortaleza Blanco offers a layered palate without an alcohol burn finishing smooth enough for a vodka drinker to stomach. The choice of slow roasting the agave over [rather than] a quick steam and an extended fermentation period gives the tequila a full character beyond what I have come to expect from the Lowlands. Fortaleza has notes of pepper and coriander as you would desire from the region however there is fruitfulness along with the fragrance reminiscent of a spicy Shiraz.”
For the reasons Rob stated above in his recommendation, Fortaleza stands apart as a “tequila of a different color” in this roundup. It has several flavors almost more akin to a Highland tequila (citrus, floral notes, butter and honey), yet it is decidedly Lowland with its minerality, light earthiness and somewhat briney, vegetal finish. This was certainly one of the standouts in this tasting, offering a complexity rarely found in a blanco tequila.
