This is where you can read about the many restaurants we've featured over the years. Just like in the physical magazine, we've arranged the restaurants by the cuisine offered at each restaurant. Some of our most recently uploaded articles can be found below.

Alternately, you can browse through restaurants by cuisine by selecting one from the options above. Or you can seek out a specific restaurant and go directly to that article by selecting a cuisine from the drop down box, then selecting one of the associated restaurants.

We hope you enjoy reading about these restaurants as much as we enjoyed writing them!

The Red Dot PDF Print E-mail
Restaurants - French Canadian

By Angie West

a photo of The Red Dot's Mushroom Rolls and WingsLocated in what some call “Narnia,” you know, that little area between East North Ave and the river, is a fab little bar and restaurant. The Red Dot is, as you would imagine, awash in red with huge artsy wall decor and a prominent bar. Food and drink specials are craftily scrawled upon numerous chalkboards, so be sure to check them out before placing any orders, as these change often and offer some great deals. This place is such a great balance between a comfort food restaurant and full service bar that it draws in folks of all kinds.

The Rumpus Room PDF Print E-mail
Restaurants - Gastropub

By Brian West

a photo of Rumpus Room's Apple SaladThe Bartolotta Restaurant Group has been a staple of fine dining in Milwaukee since Joe and his brother Paul opened Ristorante Bartolotta in 1993. Since then, “Bartolotta” has become a carefully crafted brand synonymous with “quality” and “elegance.” When a restaurant bears the Bartolotta name, the diner immediately knows they can expect the very best in atmosphere, service, food and wine. So when it was announced in 2011 that the Bartolotta Restaurant Group would be opening a gastro pub in the fall of that year with a focus on craft beer, craft cocktails and classic pub fare (given the “Bartolotta treatment”), I was understandably excited!

The Rumpus Room opened in the spot on Water Street formerly occupied by Eagan’s, just past the main Water Street drag and kitty-corner from the Performing Arts Center. I’ve since been to Rumpus several times, but from my very first visit—a casual brunch with my wife—I knew I would soon be writing this very article.

Restaurants - Irish

Brocach (BRO-caw) is one of Milwaukee’s authentic Irish Pubs, and we couldn’t wait to see if the fare was as Irish as the décor. We’d been there many times before, so we already knew the answer, but give me a reason to eat and write and I’m on it!

Setting the stage for a flavor-packed visit was The Big Irish Breakfast ($12.50). Throw Irish sausage, Irish bacon, two eggs, baked beans, a grilled tomato and black and white pudding on the plate, and you’re in for a breakfast to start all breakfasts! One patron politely told me this was exactly what she ate in Ireland. So there you go!

a picture of County Clare's Molly Malone Mussels

The County Clare on Astor Street is a haven for Irish fare and a generally great experience. We had a hard time narrowing down the menu, so the table got full rather quickly.

The Molly Malone Mussels ($9.95) are steamed in a white wine, garlic and butter broth and pair quite well with a side of Irish Chips ($6.95), which are smothered in a curry sauce—a simply perfect way to start the County Clare experience! I can’t pass up this combo on each visit.
