Oscar’s Pub & Grill
Cuisine: Burgers & Pub Fare
1712 W Pierce St
By Brian West
No discussion on sandwiches would be complete without bringing up the topic of the American classic—the burger. Milwaukee is home to so many fantastic burger restaurants, but my go-to favorite for the last several years has been Oscar’s Pub & Grill on Pierce Street.
While you can find a good variety of pub fare at Oscar’s, they specialize in big, juicy, perfectly messy and surprisingly affordable burgers. Ranging in price from just $5 for a plain, classic hamburger (with a side of fries, mind you), up to $7.25 for their “Big O,” one of their five specialty cheeseburgers, this one topped with chipotle jack, smoked gouda, hickory bacon, chorizo, fried onions, jalapeños, a side of house guacamole and a side of fries. My personal favorite is the Big Foot: crumbled blue & Boursin cheese, lettuce, tomato & onion.
When I’m not feeling a burger, I have another go-to that Oscar’s does quite well—their Cuban Frankie. In this slight variation on the classic, pulled pork, shaved ham, pickles, Wisconsin Swiss and dijon mustard are served on panini-style pressed ciabatta rather than the classic cuban roll, and comes with a side of fries. The pressed ciabatta makes the sandwich feel more like a grilled cheese and is hot throughout, somehow making the whole sandwich a bit more satisfying.
