Sandwiches have been around for probably since mankind mastered seed and soil and settled into civilizations. Modern agriculture gave birth to bakers and, therefore, bread. Since then crafty consumers have been carrying their lunch with them—meats and cheeses tucked neatly between slices of bread.

The modern sandwich, however, is famously attributed to John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich in the 18th century, who was said to order meat tucked between two pieces of bread (allegedly so that he could continue to play Cribbage without getting his card greasy). Virtually every culture has some sort sandwich. There are enough varieties to make one dizzy. But here are some of my personal favorites that Milwaukee has to offer, where to find them and why I picked them over the countless other options. Hopefully, this admittedly abbreviated spotlight will help narrow down your plethora of choices.

No discussion on sandwiches would be complete without bringing up the topic of the American classic—the burger. Milwaukee is home to so many fantastic burger restaurants, but my go-to favorite for the last several years has been Oscar’s Pub & Grill on Pierce Street.

In any discussion on sandwiches, I must bring up McBob’s. This often overlooked neighborhood Celtic pub on the very west end of Milwaukee (nearly Tosa) serves up what I will unashamedly call the hands-down best corned beef in Milwaukee. They serve it several ways (including a corned beef hash during weekend brunch), but it’s best showcased in their Reuben.

Somewhat hidden on the not-too-often traveled intersection of Cass & Wells, but mere blocks from Cathedral Square, Buckley’s Restaurant & Bar does pretty much everything right. But most importantly, for this particular article at least, Buckley’s has the distinction of serving a sandwich I literally dream about—their bánh mì.

Milwaukee’s East Side is home to one of our city’s newest and most exciting sandwich restaurants—Love Handle. Owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Chris and Ally Benedyk, Love Handle’s seemingly simple restaurant has been turning heads with its thoughtful and artisanal approach to sandwich-making. The menu is in constant flux, with Chris choosing his ingredients based on what’s fresh and, perhaps more remarkably, what inspires him. In other words, while you won’t find a “regular” here, you’ll regularly find something to love.
