Anchor California Lager

Anchor Brewing | San Francisco, California

4.9% ABV

Recommended by: Rob Zellermayer, Palm Tavern

Caramel drizzled over biscuits trample subtle nuttiness and a suggestion of bittersweet cocoa; a unique aroma coming from this clear golden honey-colored brew considering it’s only brewed with 2-row pale malt! Caramel fades into dry biscuits and a hoppy bitter finish with little hop flavor to speak of. Malt-forward; there are just enough hops to balance the beer to a crisp and drinkable level, begging to be paired with a juicy burger.

Calabaza Blanca

Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Brewing

Dexter, Michigan

4.8% ABV

Recommended By: Kaleb Schweke, Ray’s Wine & Spirits

“Calabaza Blanca comes from an artisanal brewery over in Michigan. This beer is their interpretation of a Belgian Witbier and it is fruity, wheaty and yeasty with a tart, dry finish that is akin to a white wine with nice acidity. Very food-friendly.

A step outside the norm, Jolly Pumpkin’s witbier features the brewery’s wild yeast, which gives its bright citrus and soft wheat nose an oaky, musty and lactic sour character that escapes its effervescent white head. Deeper in color, this raw golden honey beer is wheat-dominant on the palate with next to no spice and a simple splash of lemon citrus on the finish. Despite the nose, Calabaza Blanca is simplistic with just a touch of lactic tartness on the finish.

Alaskan White Ale

Alaskan Brewing Company

Juneau, Alaska

5.3% ABV

Recommended By: Danielle Baerwald, Erv’s Mug

“Alaskan White is the hands-down favorite around here. We used to be able to get it in draft (it has an awesome polar bear handle). For whatever reason, we can only get it in bottle now, but it still sells well.

The fleeting white head disappears into a slightly muted yellow color, but not before we are able to catch a whiff of its complex, spicy nose. Coriander and white pepper mingle with floral hints and a caramel-drizzled orange peel sweetness. Moderately bright and refreshing, the aroma makes its way into taste, where honey, citrus and clove finish with a smooth feel and light body.

Blanche de Chambly

Unibroue

Chambly, Quebec

5.0% ABV

Recommended By: Emily Erler, Lowlands Group

“When it comes to bier—these Canadians have killed it! I haven't had a Unibroue I didn't like. Blanche is a great Belgian style Witbier. It pours a hazy golden color with a good amount of head. You can expect to pick up some spice from the yeast strain along with citrus notes. Mouthfeel is nice and silky. Overall, it is very easy to drink no matter what time of year. No need for a lemon in this one.

It’s easier to understand why Blanche de Chambly is far yeastier than the other beers, as it pours completely cloudy with sediment and a stable white head. The classic Belgian yeast nose (sans the big spice character), soft wheat and light citrus funnel from aroma to flavor, where its smooth body and cleanliness focuses much more on the soft wheat than spice or citrus peel additions.
