Indiana University law professor William Oliver started Oliver Winery in the 1960s as a hobby in his basement. That hobby, though, has grown into a commercial winery that now distributes to 14 states and sells nearly 300,000 cases every year. In the summer of 2010, they began a line of ciders that quickly sold out. This year, they ramped up production and even introduced a few new flavors including raspberry, peach and strawberry.

Apple on the nose, this is a cider on the drier end of the spectrum. Not terribly sweet, people that enjoy brut champagne (like myself) would definitely feel comfortable with this. Of all the flavored varieties, peach was the runaway favorite. The sweetness of the fresh peaches are a complement to the dryness of the base cider and serves as the perfect patio drink. You’ve heard of lawnmower beer? Well, this is lawnmower cider!

They Say: “Smokebeer from Schlenkerla is a dark, aromatic, bottom fermented beer with 13.5 percent original extract, which is equivalent to an alcohol content of 5.1 percent. No doubt: there are stronger beers, but nevertheless, one should not underestimate ... it can make you "schlenker" quite a bit [walk like a drunk person]. Its smoky flavor is being achieved by exposing the malt to the intense, aromatic smoke of burning beech-wood logs at the Schlenkerla-maltings. After mixing it with premium-class hops in the brew, it matures in 700 year old cellars, deep down in the hills of Bamberg, into a mellow, magnificent-tasting beer, best drunk directly in "Schlenkerla". An Original amongst the beers, even amongst the Bavarian beers.”

We Say: Dark caramel-colored with a loose light khaki head, this smoked Maibock is truly a Rauchbier and is very polarizing. Smelling like a glorious combination of bacon and campfire, the nose is bold without completely punching you in the face. Old World Wisconsin is all over this beer; with campfire in the mouth, beefy and light amber maltiness turns to a fuller-bodied beer that’s not syrupy and retains its clean lager finish. Completely different from any other beer here—nay, any other beer, period—it’s a must-try for anyone. If you don’t enjoy it, use the rest of the bottle for cooking. It works wonders in food, too!

They Say: “Maifest is a seasonal specialty beer offered in the spring months. It is brewed with a blend of three different specialty malts and the finest imported and domestic hops, in the tradition of Munich's Hofbrauhaus Maibock (My-Bock) beer. This full-bodied, blonde dopplebock has a rich, assertive maltiness with a slight, but unique sweetness balanced by a moderate hop bitterness and a citrusy hop aroma.”

We Say: Straw blonde, Schell’s Maifest was the only beer to feature the classic goat on the label. A touch of floral hop on the nose, caramel malts held the fort in this harder-to-smell beer. This malty sweet maibock transitions, slowly, to bitterness and a faint metallic finish. Medium-bodied and smooth, the lingering beer is creamy but crisp, too. This is an enjoyable everyman’s beer that’s flavorful and ushers in spring well.
