Upper 90 Sports Pub PDF Print E-mail
Bars & Clubs - Downtown

a photo of Upper 90 Sports PubThe term gastropub is becoming more commonplace as a number of them continue to pop up across Milwaukee, but what does it mean when a place bills itself as “Milwaukee’s First Gastro Sports Pub?” After stepping inside the Upper 90 Sports Pub, the idea becomes clear. It’s blurring the line between sports bar and restaurant.

Housed in an old Schlitz brewery tavern that dates back to 1886, the location is one of the longest continuously-running bars in Milwaukee. The interior definitely shows this history, from the classic tin ceiling design all the way down to the wooden beer cooler. The decor is sports-related, but it’s more about vintage sports equipment and posters than framed jerseys. Along with the flat screen HDTVs, this makes for a great alternative setting to watch a game.

Old German Beer Hall PDF Print E-mail

a picture of Old German Beer HallWant an authentic Oktoberfest experience without having to hop the pond to Germany? Look no further than the Old German Beer Hall, located on Old World Third Street. The traditional Bavarian imported brews and live polka music will have you stumbling out of the door at the end of the night wondering whether you’re just leaving a bar in Munich or if you’re still in good ol’ Wisconsin.

The first Old German Beer Hall was founded in Munich, Germany by Wilhelm V, the duke of Bavaria. Not a fan of the taste of Munich’s then-current beer offerings, the duke decided to build a brewery to create a tastier version of the beloved beverage. Over time, the Hofbräuhaus in Germany has become a destination for tourists worldwide. The Milwaukee Old German Beer Hall imitates the legendary look and feel of the original, featuring replica tables, benches and décor. To enhance the historic atmosphere, a server delivers your beer wearing a traditional beer garden-style German dress known as a dirndl.

a picture of Hi-Hat GarageThe Hi-Hat Garage (more commonly referred to simply as ‘The Garage’) is located just off of Brady Street on North Arlington Place. The venue earns its title with the large garage door located at the front of the building that can be opened during Wisconsin’s warm weather months. For the months that aren’t so generous to us sunshine lovers, The Garage has worked to bring nature from the outside in. Lining the interior walls are real trees strung with white lights crawling from the floor up onto the ceiling, giving The Garage an ethereal feel. With great atmosphere, a fully-stocked bar, and an ample menu to boot, The Garage attracts everyone from the eclectic hippie to the business professional looking for a place to unwind.

Halliday’s Irish Pub PDF Print E-mail

a picture of Halliday's Irish PubOn Farwell just north of Brady Street, this Eastside gem offers a welcome alternative to much of Milwaukee’s bar scene. Open from 2 pm ‘til bar close seven days a week, it’s the perfect neighborhood hangout.

Launched under the name Halliday’s Lounge by Bob Halliday and a partner in 1967, Halliday’s has been family-run since 1972. Bob’s wife Rosemary Maniscalco took up the mantle after his passing in 2006, keeping the bar according to their shared values, including loyalty and genuine caring for our community. Her smile broadens when she recounts Bob’s social personality. It’s the homey, undiscriminating feel of the place that has kept some regulars returning for the better part of a decade (some of them, much longer). “There are no strangers here,” Maniscalco beams, likening the pub to Cheers. “Everybody really does know your name!”

a picture of The Comet CafeA long-time East Side staple, The Comet Café has evolved since its days as a neighborhood coffee shop. In 2005, after annexing the space next door, The Comet incorporated a full bar and restaurant in addition to their classic java concoctions and lighter fare. Today, patrons can select from a far-ranging variety of comfort foods and libations this cafe has crafted with a purpose. Their mission statement is printed on the menu: in essence, to emphasize the idea of “slow food,” a salubriously hearty alternative to the fast-paced offerings many folks fit into their busy (and often, resultantly rushed and unhealthy) lifestyles.
