5 Year Anniversary Party
Blogs - Alcoholmanac Blog

As many of you know, Alcoholmanac Magazine has recently published its 5 Year Anniversary Issue! I know, crazy, right? These 5 years have really flown by!

In celebration of this huge milestone, we're throwing a party this coming Monday, Oct 22nd, at Buckhead Saloon (1044 North Old World 3rd St). Why Monday? Because we want this celebration to be all about you, our friends in the service industry! While the event will be open to the public, and anyone is welcome to attend, the focus (from the events to the date and time) are geared towards making it as easy as possible for our service industry friends to attend as possible.

We'll be kicking off the party at 6pm with a mini trade show-style event. We have more than 20 vendors (OK, I suppose that makes it no-so-mini) pouring free samples of their products until 8 or 9pm, or until the product runs dry. We'll have a live performance by Evan Christian during this portion of the party.

The event is FREE to attend, although we humbly ask that you make at least one purchase at the cash bar. Of course, we'll be having 2-4-1 everything during the trade show, so that's not too bad, right?

After the trade show, we'll keep the party going with Milwaukee Hot Club performing Gypsy Jazz and the bar serving up sponsored drink specials on beer, wine and spirits (TBA). We'll also be giving away gift bags and raffle items throughout the night!

Below is our event flyer (front and back) with more details. Please share this with all your friends (service industry or not) and help us make this the party that you all deserve!

Thanks for your support over these last 5 years. It has been a pleasure and an honor to get to know you all and produce a magazine about the industry we all love so much! We hope to see you Monday!

First Wisconsin-produced Bourbon
Blogs - Alcoholmanac Blog
Congratulations to our friends at 45th Parallel Distillery in New Richmond, WI on the release of their new Bourbon! Considered by most craft distillers as the "King of Spirits," virtually every distillery in the US wants to eventually produce a Bourbon. Now Wisconsin can claim their very own brand! We received the following press release today, providing details on this exciting announcement, as well as the release party for the Bourbon, to be held at their distillery:

New Richmond, WI - Sunday August 26, 2012, noon-6pm, 45th Parallel Distillery [will be] releasing its long awaited bourbon to the public at the distillery 1570 Madison Avenue, New Richmond WI.

Starting at noon this limited release is available on a first come first serve basis. Visitors will be given the opportunity to taste and purchase small batch whiskey while having access to the distillers and the distillery.

About the Bourbon:
Border Straight Bourbon is truly small batch in every detail. Border Straight Bourbon is artisan distilled from grains provided by a 6th generation family farm, minutes from the distillery. No short cuts. We practice traditional aging techniques in medium char, Ozark White Oak barrels constructed from wood staves that are air dried three years. No Blending:  only whiskey from our grain, and distilled in our pot still, and put in bottles that carry our name.

About 45th Parallel Distillery
45th Parallel is located in Western Wisconsin 50 minute drive from Downtown Minneapolis. Only 4 distillers work and create in this facility. The Border name is from the fact that 2 of the distillers are from Minnesota and other 2 are from Wisconsin. Three of the distillers cross the MN/WI border every day to produce this bourbon. The distillery started making vodka in 2007, added gin early 2009 and began aging whiskey at the end of 2009.  Currently 45th Parallel has a hundred barrels of bourbon and rye aging. Come and taste how far we have come.

a picture of Border Bourbon aging in oak barrelsNow we're sure some of you may be thinking, "this is cool and all, but it's not real Bourbon." We get this a lot. In fact, it is real Bourbon. It can be made anywhere. For a whiskey to be classified as Bourbon, it needs only to meet the following requirements:

  • made from a mash (grain mixture) that is at least 51% corn
  • aged in brand spankin' new, charred-oak barrels
  • distilled to no more than 160 proof (80% ABV)
  • entered into the barrel for aging at no more than 125 proof
  • bottled at 80 proof or more
  • for a Bourbon to be labeled "Straight Bourbon," it must be aged at least 2 years

As you can see, there is no requirement that it be made in Kentucky (a common misconception). So, why haven't we seen any of our other Wisconsin Distilleries produce Bourbon yet? Well, while there are a lot of shortcuts that can be taken to produce a whiskey that can technically be called a Bourbon (note no age requirement), a quality whiskey takes a lot of time. Time, to an infant distillery (read "craft distillery") means no return on their investment for possibly years! In Wisconsin, we've been lucky to have some extremely good and patient distilleries. Every one of them is working on a Bourbon, we can almost guarantee it, but 45th Parallel is the first to release its full production label - a Straight Bourbon no less, patiently aged and done the right way. The Wisconsin way. That's why this is such a big deal.

Congrats once again to 45th Parallel Distillery! To learn more about 45th Parallel Distillery, visit their website: http://www.45thparallelspirits.com/

Leinie's Big Eddy IIPA "Hops" Aboard S/V Denis Sullivan
Blogs - Alcoholmanac Blog

a picture of the S/V Denis Sullivan

We just received word from Tenth and Blake and Leinenkugel's that a special apple brandy barrel-aged Big Eddy Imperial IPA barrel will set sail aboard the 137-foot, three-masted Great Lakes schooner S/V Denis Sullivan for some good ol' fashioned nautical barrel-aging. Here's the full story from Tenth and Blake:

"Milwaukee will have the chance to watch summer sail in this Saturday (May 26), as the S/V Denis Sullivan makes her entrance into the harbor [next to Discovery World (500 North Harbor Drive)] at noon. She’ll be joined by the Milwaukee Fire Department’s fireboat, the Coast Guard and other official vessels. Once docked, the S/V Denis Sullivan will be available for deck tours, which cost $2 for an individual and $5 for families. Tours are free for Discovery World members.
